St. Louis is Testing a Free Electric Cab Service

Do you have a business trip lined up in St. Louis in the next couple of months? Soon, it could be much easier to get around the city thanks to a $135,000 investment from the Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District.

Starting in March, St. Louis will launch a pilot program for a free electric cab service that will be available to the general public. This service will utilize five-passenger “eCabs” that can be hailed from the street, or from a smartphone app for Android and iOS devices. The service will operate similarly to other commuter ridesharing programs, which allow multiple passengers to be picked up by a vehicle heading to a common destination. The free eCabs will reportedly transport passengers “anywhere within downtown St. Louis.”

According to St. Louis Communications Director Koran Addo, the new free cab service is just one component of a larger effort to embrace new technologies that make it cheaper and easier for commuters, business travelers and tourists to get around the city. Last year, the city launched another similar program that tested an electric bus from Proterra capable of driving more than 200 miles on a single charge.
